AUTISM SCHOOL SET TO CLOSE

A school for children with autism in Stevenage looks set to close due to a lack of funding.

Tracks, an independent charity offers respite care for children aged two to five.

It's one of only three in the country that offers this type of care but from May the 23rd the service will have to close.

Parents there told Hertbeat News it's a sad situation.

FOSTER CARER FORTNIGHT


As foster carer fortnight gets underway Hertfordshire County Council's asking possible carers to come forward.

Currently in Hertbeat Country their are 550 families looking after around 740 children of all ages.

Roz Scarborough has been a carer for just over a year and says it is the most satisfying experience.

GYPSY OFFICER FOR POLICE

A special policeman's been assigned to improving links with Hertfordshire's Gyspy community.

The constabulary have announced the new role of Gypsy and Traveller Liaison Officer.

PC Kevin Moore - an officer with 26 years experience - has been appointed to the role.

He's spent his first few weeks visiting some of the 33 official sites across the county.

BENEFIT CHEAT

A Little Berkhamsted man's been handed a community order for benefit fraud.

Ian Chappel was prosecuted by East Herts Council when he didn't tell them he was in full time work, and was overpaid by over four thousand pounds.

The 44 year old claimed he'd informed the council and wasn't aware he was still receiving benefits.

But officers showed that he'd continued claiming benefits for almost a year.

He was sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid work and he must pay the money back plus £2,000 costs.

BURGLAR HANDS HIMSELF IN

A Burglar from Hatfield handed himself into police after hearing a scheme was in place to help steer people like himself away from a life of crime.

Craig Armstrong appeared at St Albans crown court to admitt three burglaries in Welwyn and Hatfield and asked for a further 41 to be taken into consideration.

Armstrong wants to join the 'Choices and Consequences' programme which tests offenders for drugs, and subjects them to a curfew.

If he's suitable for the programme, he'll be be brought back to court where sentencing will be deferred for six months.

TRUSTWORTHY TRADESMAN

Hertfordshire County Council has launched a new service to help householders find reliable, trustworthy tradesmen.

It's the first local authority to launch TrustMark, an award-winning scheme supported by the building industry and consumer protection groups.

Hertfordshire Trading Standards can now assess any firm, across any of the 17 trades currently covered by the scheme.
